Replacing one missing tooth, properly
A single tooth implant replaces a missing tooth with a titanium root and custom crown — without grinding down the healthy teeth beside it. In Sunbury, expect $3,000 – $5,500 all-inclusive, over roughly three to six months. Suitability is confirmed at a free assessment.

Is it right for you?
When a single implant makes sense
A missing tooth is more than a gap in a photo. The teeth beside it slowly drift, the tooth above or below it over-erupts, and the jawbone underneath begins to shrink from lack of use. An implant addresses all three — but it is not automatically the right answer for everyone. These are the three situations we see most often in Sunbury.
01
A tooth already lost
A gap from an extraction or accident — recent or years ago. Even long-standing gaps can usually be treated, though older gaps sometimes need bone grafting first. Bone condition decides the approach, and we assess it properly with 3D imaging.
02
A tooth that cannot be saved
Deep decay, a failed root canal, or a fracture below the gum line. When a tooth is beyond saving, the extraction and the implant can often be planned together — which protects the bone and can shorten your total treatment time.
03
A front tooth, visibly
The aesthetic zone demands extra care with gum shape, crown colour, and the way light passes through the tooth. We plan front teeth differently to back teeth — and we tell you so upfront, because the difference matters.
Candidacy
Are you suitable? The honest checklist
Most healthy adults with a missing tooth are candidates. At your assessment we look at four things in particular:
- Jawbone volume — the implant needs enough bone to anchor into. Where bone has shrunk, grafting can usually rebuild it
- Gum health — active gum disease must be treated first; implants placed into unhealthy gums fail more often
- General health — uncontrolled diabetes and some medications affect healing and need managing, not hiding
- Smoking — smoking roughly doubles the risk of implant failure. We will not refuse smokers, but we will tell you the numbers straight
Told “no” somewhere else? A previous knock-back — usually over bone loss — is not always the final word. Grafting techniques have moved on, and a proper 3D scan sometimes finds options a visual exam missed. The assessment is free, so a second look costs you nothing. What happens
Three stages, no mystery
01
Assess
Free examination with 3D imaging. You leave with a written quote and a clear yes, no, or “here is what we would do first”. No pressure, no obligation — the plan is yours to take away.
02
Place
The titanium implant is placed under local anaesthetic in a single visit — most patients describe pressure, not pain. It then fuses with your bone over three to six months while you get on with life.
03
Restore
Your custom crown is fitted and matched to the teeth around it. From there, you brush and floss it like any other tooth, and we check it at your regular visits.

No surprises
What your quote includes — and what it is made of
Always included
- The titanium implant and its placement
- Abutment (the small connector between implant and crown) and final custom crown
- Local anaesthetic
- All standard follow-up visits
- A written, itemised quote before anything begins
Sometimes needed · quoted upfront
- Tooth extraction before placement
- Bone grafting where bone is insufficient
- Sedation beyond local anaesthetic
- Gum disease treatment first
The materials, plainly
Medical-grade titanium — the same biocompatible metal used in hip and knee replacements for decades — with a full ceramic or porcelain crown, shade-matched to your teeth. We use established, TGA-registered implant systems with long published track records, and we will tell you exactly which system is going into your jaw and why.
The full picture
Risks and recovery, without the gloss
Implants have a strong track record, but they are surgery, and surgery carries risks. You deserve to hear them before you decide, not after.
The risks that matter
Infection at the implant site
The most common complication, largely preventable with good hygiene and aftercare. Caught early, usually simple to treat.
Implant failure to integrate
In a small percentage of cases the bone does not bond. Smoking, uncontrolled diabetes and gum disease raise this risk; a failed implant can usually be replaced after healing.
Nerve or sinus involvement
Lower back teeth sit near a nerve, upper back teeth near the sinus — exactly why we plan on a 3D scan, not a flat X-ray.
Gum recession around the crown
Gums can recede over years, occasionally exposing the implant edge. Placement technique and gum health management reduce the risk.
Recovery, week by week
Days 1–3
Soreness and swelling peak. Over-the-counter pain relief, soft foods, cold compress. Most people work from day one or two.
Week 1
Swelling settles. Gentle brushing around the site. Any stitches dissolve or come out.
Weeks 2–4
The site feels normal day to day. Eating returns to usual, still favouring the other side.
Months 2–6
The quiet phase — osseointegration. No ongoing pain; most patients forget it is happening until crown day.
Every risk above is assessed for your case at the free assessment, in writing. Deeper dives: are dental implants safe? and recovery week by week. Any surgical or invasive procedure carries risks; you can always seek a second opinion from an appropriately qualified health practitioner — we would rather you did than proceed unsure. Know your options
Implant, bridge, or do nothing?
An implant is not the only way to deal with a missing tooth, and it is not always the right one. Here is the honest comparison we walk through at every assessment.
| Option | Neighbouring teeth | Longevity | Upfront cost |
|---|---|---|---|
| Single implant | Untouched | 15+ years with care | Higher |
| Bridge | Ground down for support | 10–15 years, then replaced | Medium |
| Do nothing | Drift into the gap over time | Bone loss continues | None now, more later |
The honest version is longer than a table — including when we would actually recommend the bridge. Read the full implant vs bridge comparison →
Not sure which option fits you?
That is exactly what the assessment decides — with your scan, your teeth, your budget on the table.
Local care
Why treatment close to home matters for implants
An implant is not one appointment — it is an assessment, a placement, healing checks, crown fitting, and follow-ups over several months. When your clinic is ten minutes away rather than an hour, you actually attend those visits, small issues get caught while they are still small, and the person who placed your implant is the one who looks after it for the years that follow. That continuity is most of the argument against implant tourism — and half the argument against the city commute.

Quick answers
Single tooth implant questions
How long does the whole process take?
Commonly three to six months from assessment to final crown, mostly healing time while the implant fuses with your bone. Complex cases with grafting take longer — you will know your timeline before you start.
Does getting an implant hurt?
Placement is done under local anaesthetic; most patients describe pressure rather than pain, then a few days of manageable soreness. Read the honest answer →
Can I get the implant on the same day as the extraction?
Sometimes — it depends on infection, bone condition, and which tooth. How extraction and implant timing works →
How long will the implant last?
With good hygiene and regular check-ups, implants routinely last 15 years and often much longer. The crown may need replacing sooner than the implant itself. How long implants really last →
Why not just get a bridge? It is cheaper upfront.
A fair question. A bridge means grinding down two healthy teeth and typically needs replacing within 10 to 15 years. Over the long run the totals converge — and the implant leaves your other teeth alone. The honest comparison →
I have been missing this tooth for years. Is it too late?
Rarely. Long-standing gaps often involve some bone loss, which may mean grafting first — but a 3D scan tells us exactly where you stand, free.
Can I afford this on a normal income?
That is exactly who we built our payment pathways for: plans, health fund rebates, superannuation early release under ATO criteria, and staged treatment. Explore payment options →
